Major Earnest "Ernie" Maddox, U.S. Army Retired Obituary

Major Earnest Maddox died April 10, 2024, at his home on Lake Oconee, Eatonton, Georgia.

He was born in Macon, Georgia, on August 13, 1944, to Hubert Jackson Maddox and Dorothy Howell. Ernie grew up in Macon, Georgia, where he attended Winship School. A member of Chi Delta Fraternity, he graduated Lanier High school Class of 1963. Ernie completed his formal education at the University of Georgia graduating in 1975.

As a member of Lanier High School ROTC Program, he was drafted into the United States Army attending Officer’s Training School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a Platoon Leader. The Combat Infantry Badge, Mark of Distinction was awarded to him at Pleiku, Vietnam, where he also received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

After active duty, Ernie retired from the National Guard after thirty-three years of military service. Following his retirement, he worked for several government contract companies, including contracts at Fort Stewart, Georgia and the Federal Law Enforcement Center in Brunswick, Georgia.

Ernie was devoted to his family, and loyal to his friends in Cedar Hills Hunt Club and his special friends in Alabama. He enjoyed the long-time friendships of the Lanier Lunch Group, meeting on Tuesdays at Jeneane’s in Macon, Georgia. Ernie genuinely appreciated the support of his family and many friends during his illness.

Ernie loved to hunt and fish, watch old western movies, and dance. He knew the lyrics to every Elvis Presley song.

Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his wife Judy; sons Derrick Maddox of Atlanta, Georgia, Jason (Marcie) Maddox of St. Simons, Georgia, Chris (Sara) Maddox of Atlanta, Georgia; daughter Taylor Maddox of Idaho; granddaughter Addison Maddox of Boston, Massachusetts; Sisters, Eve Robinson of Atlanta, Georgia and Carol Maddox of Macon, Georgia; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2024, in the Chapel of Hart’s at the Cupola. The family will greet friends for a reception following the service. Burial will follow the reception at Allentown Cemetery at 2:00 pm in Danville, Georgia.
